Transforming Complex Commission Tracking with a Custom Sales Dashboard in Microsoft Business Central

The Challenge: Complex Sales Data & Manual Commission Calculations

Our client needed far deeper visibility into their sales performance than what out-of-the-box Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central could provide.

Specifically, they required the ability to:

  • Track freight charged to customers vs. actual freight costs, including both inbound and outbound shipments
  • Allocate freight accurately through Item Charges
  • Analyze profitability at a granular level across transactions

But the biggest hurdle? Their commission structure.

Unlike simple percentage-based models, their commissions depended on multiple variables:

  • Item Category Code
  • Salesperson Code
  • Different calculation bases:
    • Some sales reps earned commission on gross sales
    • Others earned commission on net profit

This level of complexity made it nearly impossible to manage commissions within standard ERP workflows.

The Breaking Point: Spreadsheet Dependency

Because of these limitations, the client was forced to manage commissions entirely outside of their ERP system.

Each pay period involved:

  • Exporting data into Excel
  • Manually calculating commissions across multiple variables
  • Double-checking formulas to avoid costly errors

This process was not only time-consuming—taking hours every cycle—but also introduced significant risk for human error, inconsistencies, and lack of real-time visibility.

The Solution: A Custom Sales & Commission Dashboard

To address these challenges, Siberus ERP designed and implemented a custom Sales & Commission Dashboard directly within Business Central.

This tailored solution enabled the client to:

1. Centralize All Sales & Freight Data

By integrating freight charges and costs into a single system, the dashboard provides a clear view of:

  • True transaction-level profitability
  • Accurate cost allocation for inbound and outbound logistics

2. Automate Complex Commission Structures

The dashboard was built to handle multi-variable commission rules, including:

  • Conditional logic based on item categories and salespeople
  • Flexible calculation models for both gross sales and net profit

3. Eliminate Manual Calculations

With automation in place, the client no longer needs to rely on Excel spreadsheets. Commission calculations are now:

  • Accurate
  • Consistent
  • Instantly accessible

4. Provide Real-Time Insights

Instead of waiting until the end of a pay period, leadership and sales teams can now:

  • Monitor commission earnings in real time
  • Analyze performance trends
  • Make faster, data-driven decisions

The Results: Efficiency, Accuracy, and Confidence

By implementing this custom dashboard, the client achieved:

  • Significant time savings every pay period
  • Elimination of manual errors in commission calculations
  • Improved trust in financial and sales data
  • Greater operational efficiency across finance and sales teams

Most importantly, they transformed commission tracking from a reactive, manual process into a proactive, automated system embedded within their ERP.

The Challenge: Realtime Coordination Across Two Warehouse Facilities

Our client, a rapidly expanding business, faced a critical operational challenge after adding a second facility—a large warehouse. Effective communication between the front desk team in Building 1 and the warehouse/loading team in Building 2 was essential for efficiency and safety. They required a web application to streamline this process, enabling the front desk to log customer arrivals and assign loading lanes while the warehouse team managed bay assignments and loading status. The app needed to support 10-15 simultaneous users with realtime updates, integrate with their Business Central ERP system to update sales orders, and maintain a historical log of customer activity.

SFTP usage in Dynamics 365 Business Central

Files exchange in between systems is not the best way to integrate. However, when API is unavailable or cannot be used, SFTP (SSH/Secure File Transfer Protocol) can be one of the options to consider

For Business Central on-premises you can use WinSCP dotnet libraries and successfully read/write/delete files directly on SFTP server. However, you can't use this approach for SaaS Business Central. What can be done in that case? The answers are provided in the article below.
